VACATION COMPLETELY DIFFERENT - CROATIA 2017
No umbrellas and inflatables, but bike and heave tools, finding new lines and last but not least, ride. That was our priority since our first day in Croatia.
Original idea came from Jakub in Mexico. Although riding in stone-pits is definitely unique idea (and we still continue on that project…), freeride trip to Croatia seems like a natural way of progress, like a next step to his riding.
But to find a great freeride location was anything but easy. After browsing on Google Earth and a lot of blogs and photos on the internet, we decided for island called PAG. But to be clear, even after that, we couldn’t be 100% sure if anything is rideable. From the pictures itself, everything looks interesting, but it is a whole new story to actually stand there and another to ride on the bike. Croatia is very well known country full of rocky hills, so the probability we will found nothing but huge rocks was quite high.
After a long ride to Croatia we finally made it on the island. Rocks everywhere. We had a mixed feelings if we really did a good choice. Fortunately, during our first location scouting we found a great place just 300 meters from our accommodation. But I hoped that it’s just an appetizer…
Right from the terrace I could see the “main course” of our trip. Right across the harbour was the coastline that we knew from photos. It all seems so good from far away. But the next few days in was nothing but the hard work. All the lines need to shaped from the scratch and those huge rocks did not make it any easier, believe me… Plus, it was right at the begging of the summer. Ideal to work in 30+°C for sure.
“The first day I felt weird on the bike and couldn’t get use to new terrain at all. Next day I felt like a new person. Everything went according to plan. I enjoy the surroundings, ride and every moment. “ // Jakub Béreš.
One of the challenges was to know the right speed. A quick bath with bike was not a very pleasant option ...
Our "main course" near Metajna did not disappoint. Scott Ridley were filming here a few months before, some sci-fi. No wonder, it all looks like we are on Mars…
The most interesting and longest ride went from the top of the steepest part of the hill till the very bottom. That equals few days of work and only 1 minute ride. This area has some amazing potential, but it would require sh*t load of work.
But after all I think that trip was successful. We brought a lot of material and mainly Jakub had a chance to ride on completely different terrain, that he is used to. And new experiences are always good ;)
